The World Through Tainted Colours

tinted glassesFrom that first little pink line on a blue stick to legos vs barbies, should our world suddenly be divided Pink and Blue? Entering the maternity circle feels a little like stepping into a bi-polar world. To what extent should you give into this?

It starts with deciding – or not – to know the gender of your baby. Family will tell you that you absolutely should so that they know what to buy, friends will be curious and make bets, random people will tell you that you shouldn’t to avoid gender stereotyping your unborn child, and doctors will tell you they really don’t care and could you please hurry up to make a decision.

But here we are and I really just simply, genuinely, wanted to know! And dudududum… It’s a boy! So does this mean I now need to save up for football lessons, buy little toy cars and planes and avoid all and any feminine colours in the nursery? I’d like to believe my kid will end up going for sports and toys because he sincerely likes them rather than because they were handpicked by antiquated cliches shoved down our throats by retail stores everywhere.

Sorry, but no. I auto-proclaim myself a colour anarchist. I shall not be dragged into an abyss of never-ending shades of blue. So, one little tip is: go after happy colours, no matter which! And if your little boy wants to play with kitchen sets for a while, maybe all it means is that there is still hope the masculine gent can learn to cook!

So far I have received a fabulous little duck-towel and ensemble in bright yellow, a beautiful green music player, and lots of white pretty baby clothes – and baby (and mummy) will be delighted!

BabyGiftsBaby will actually most probably not remember, and I sincerely doubt baby will feel traumatised from fewer blue items in his room… Although just in case I could buy him a few T-shirts labelled BOY and LITTLE MAN to remove any doubts.

Here are a couple of non-gender-stereotyped deco ideas that I love!
